Commedia dell'arte

Personally, I thought this piece would be a perfect fit for my first post. Basically if you don't know me, I'm inspired in so many ways by theatre. One form of theatre I absolutely love is Commedia dell'arte. It was a style that originated out of the Italian Renaissance. These bold and hilarious comedies over exgerate emotions and physical stage play. Due to this, I'm highly inspired by how much emotion comes out of these comedies through movement, emotion, and form. (Also, I personally just love the masks the stock characters wear.)

So, In honor of these comedies, I decided to paint a digital painting in photoshop.

First, I blocked in all of the colors.

Then... I created a shading (using mainly purple, blues, and greens) and lighting pass (using yellows and reds). All pulling from the colors of the masked stock character Truffaldino.

Finally... with all of the layers together and some tweaking. The final result.

Hope you enjoyed this first post. If you don't know much about Commedia dell'arte, I recommend you look it up.... who knows, maybe it will inspire you as well.
